For a fun night of Appalachian music and dance, go to Stompin' Ground dance hall in Maggie Valley, self-proclaimed as the "Cloggin Capitol of the World". Open April-October on Saturday nights only, you can sit in stadium style seating (for 900 people!) or join the action on the 60x80 foot dance floor.
Opened in 1982, the Edwards family built the barn-like building dedicated to mountain square dance and clogging. Several times during the night, the dance floor is cleared for visiting dance groups to show off their moves to an excited crowd. A huge clogging competition is held the last weekend of October.
For much of the night, the big dance floor is open for all to enjoy as the band plays bluegrass and country favorites. You can two step or line dance, or you make up your own moves. It's all about having a good time.
It's a stop on the Blue Ridge Heritage Music Trail. The Stompin' Ground lobby is a shrine to mountain dance, with walls filled with trophies, photographs and other pieces of history. Get popcorn and snacks at the concession stand. It's very family friendly with no alcoholic beverages.
Admission is $10/adults 12+, $5/children. Bring cash! They do not take credit cards.
